The Allegation
According to conspiracy lore, in October 1943 the U.S. Navy conducted an experiment at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard to make the destroyer escort USS Eldridge (DE-173) invisible to radar—or even teleport it. The story claims sailors were fused into bulkheads, driven insane, or vanished entirely.
The Official Position
"The Office of Naval Research has never conducted any investigations on invisibility."
— Naval History and Heritage Command / Office of Naval Research
The ONR and Naval Historical Center have consistently and explicitly denied the story. The Navy considers the entire episode to be a product of science fiction and misinformation, with no basis in actual naval research.
